How deep does the base need to be for a paver patio in Livingston?

For a pedestrian patio — one that will carry foot traffic, outdoor furniture, and similar loads — the standard base is 4 to 6 inches of compacted dense-graded aggregate (DGA) over stable, properly compacted subgrade, topped with approximately 1 inch of bedding sand before the pavers are set. On Livingston's clay soils, which hold moisture rather than draining freely, we are careful about subgrade stability before we begin aggregate compaction — saturated clay does not provide a consistent support layer, and skipping that assessment is a common cause of patio settlement within a few years. If the patio will also carry vehicle loads (a paved parking pad or driveway extension), the aggregate base needs to be 8 to 12 inches to handle that weight without deflecting. The pavers that heave and shift are almost always ones installed on insufficient base depth or in areas where surface and subsurface water is pooling in the aggregate layer. Polymeric sand in the joints prevents washout and weed intrusion between seasons.
