How thick should a new driveway be for a West Orange home?

For an asphalt driveway, we install a 4–6 inch compacted dense-graded aggregate subbase over properly graded subgrade, then 2.5–3 inches of hot-mix asphalt — often as a 2-inch base course plus a finish surface course. The subbase depth depends on the slope and drainage conditions of the specific lot. For concrete, driveways should be 5–6 inches thick using 4,000–4,500 PSI air-entrained concrete to handle NJ freeze-thaw and road salt. Getting the base depth right for West Orange soils — which hold water rather than draining it — is what determines how long the driveway lasts.

My driveway slopes toward the garage and water pools in front of the door — can that be fixed without tearing out the whole driveway?

Sometimes, but it depends on how the driveway was originally graded and whether the base is still sound. If the slope issue is minor and the surface is otherwise in good shape, a channel drain installed across the driveway just in front of the garage opening can intercept runoff before it reaches the door — a relatively low-cost fix. If the driveway itself has settled or heaved unevenly because of drainage failures in the base, correction requires regrading the subbase before new pavement goes down.
