The freeze-thaw cycle is the main stress: water that works into the joints or under the base will expand when it freezes and shift pavers over time. Polymeric sand reduces joint infiltration, and good surface drainage moves water away before it can pool and penetrate. If individual pavers do shift or crack, they can be reset or replaced without disturbing the surrounding installation — an advantage concrete does not offer.
