What mix strength do you use for driveways in New Jersey?

We specify 4,000–4,500 PSI air-entrained concrete for all exterior flatwork in Essex County, including driveways. The air entrainment — typically 5–7% — is essential in New Jersey because it creates microscopic voids that give freezing water room to expand, preventing surface scaling. Using a lower-strength non-air-entrained mix is the most common reason concrete driveways fail prematurely in our climate.

Do I need a permit to replace my driveway or sidewalk?

Probably yes, at least for the portion that touches the public right-of-way. Most Essex County municipalities — including Orange, Bloomfield, West Orange, and Newark — require a permit for driveway aprons and sidewalk replacements because that work affects the public sidewalk and curb cut. We handle the permit application and coordinate with your town DPW so the project is inspected and compliant. Failing to pull permits can create liability issues and may require the work to be torn out and redone.

How thick should a concrete driveway be?

A residential concrete driveway should be a minimum of 5 inches thick — 6 inches in areas that see heavy or frequent vehicle traffic. We excavate and compact a dense-graded aggregate subbase beneath that, typically 4–6 inches deep, so the total section is stable and drains freely. Skimping on thickness to save material costs is a false economy — a thin slab on an inadequate base cracks under normal use.

What are control joints and why do they matter?

Concrete shrinks slightly as it cures and continues to move with temperature changes throughout its life. Control joints are shallow cuts — about one-quarter of the slab thickness, so roughly 1 inch on a 4-inch slab — made at regular intervals to create planned weak points. When the slab cracks, it cracks along the joint rather than randomly across the surface. We space control joints every 8 to 12 feet in a grid pattern. Without them, cracking is unpredictable and the visual and structural result is much worse.

Can I use de-icing salt on my new concrete?

We recommend against it, especially for the first winter after placement and on any decorative or stamped work. Chloride-based de-icers — including rock salt and many blended products — accelerate surface scaling by drawing moisture into and out of the concrete repeatedly during freeze-thaw cycles. Sand is a safe alternative for traction. If you must use a de-icer, calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) is less damaging than sodium or calcium chloride. A quality penetrating sealer applied after the concrete has cured for at least 30 days also provides a meaningful degree of protection.

How long does concrete take to cure before I can drive on it?

Concrete reaches approximately 70% of its design strength in 7 days under normal conditions — enough to walk on carefully after 24–48 hours and carry foot traffic after 3–4 days. We typically advise waiting a full 7 days before driving a passenger vehicle on a new driveway, and 28 days for full curing before any heavy vehicle or equipment is placed on it. Curing time extends in cold weather and shortens slightly in warm, humid conditions. We discuss timing with every customer before we pour.
